                   Welcome to the year of The Magic of Rotary.

I acknowledge our Immediate Past District Governor and wish him all the best as he steps away from the joy of district leadership. I wish him a wonderful year as he embarks on the journey as his club president.
To all the members who serve on district or district committees, we applaud you. At the district changeover, I mentioned that to serve as a Rotary leader, be it at a club or district, was an honour.
I thank you for allowing me this privilege to serve you the members of district 9660. The district has a mixture of experience and first time in a district role, but we all have enthusiasm to do our best in supporting you the member. As we share the magic of Rotary with our communities, be they local or international please remember to share the magic with us. Nicole looks forward to hearing Magic stories.
Regionalisation is now officially up and going, I encourage everyone to support the pilot. As John Hewko General Secretary of Rotary International said to the DGEs at our International Assembly, “It would be wrong of us not to try something when a region's membership has declined by 23% in the past 10 years. This pilot may not be the answer and if it isn’t, it could lead to the answer.” We will have an opportunity to have our say in 2026.
Now is the time for all of us to try something different in our clubs and districts. I know many clubs do things differently at their meetings. Are you willing to try something new? One of many lessons I did learn about running a farm is, if you do what your grandparents did, you will not have your farm for long.
Congratulations to all the club presidents and their teams. Welcome to our journey of leadership for 2024- 2025.

NYSF Orientation

NYSF (National Youth Science Forum for 2024 cohort

It's been a busy year for the district committee this year. Assisting students to apply for this life changing program, processing 60 applications across District 9660 and then interviewing  40 students face to face and 20 by desktop review to select the participants for the January 2024 sessions in Canberra and Brisbane.

The last event in the process was to hold our orientation on 19 November in Walcha. Twenty-nine students and their parents travelled to Walcha to meet each other and get a briefing on what to do and what to expect in January. They were given first-hand experiences from the five amazing alumni, who also valued their involvement in the program enough to make the trip to help. Special thanks to Mia Dawson, Annie Chen, Finley Wallace, John Crosley and Eliza Dampney. Their enthusiasm was infectious and their confidence was  testament to their NYSF experience.

It was a great opportunity for the students to meet each other prior to the January sessions. The alumni spoke to them about friendships which are formed during the program and it was great to watch the process begin already.

Also special thanks to the district committee PDG Ken Hall, Deb Farquhar, Julie Clendining, PDG Bob and Margaret Ryan, Peter Paff and Erika Savage for their support and hard work during the year.

Special thanks to the Rotary clubs who have supported our candidates to enable them to participate in the program. Thank you to Walcha Rotary Club for catering for the 70 people who were there. Their catering again made the event the usual friendly Rotary welcome with morning tea and lunch for those who had travelled.

I am sure that the 2924 NYSF cohort will have an amazing residential experience and will be only too willing to come back to their supporting Rotary club to report their adventures.

Progress in Nepal

PDG David and Heather Mayne are currently in Nepal flying the flag for Rotary as always and continuing their support for this great Rotary district project.

'It's great to see the vision of Dr Ray Hodgson, Rotary member of Port Macquarie, come to fruition. Lots of hard work to get here and more hard work to come. My third visit to the site and I'm excited to see the progress on the Dolakha 'Mothers and Babies' hospital. Our relationship with the locals is wonderful and Rptary needs to be congratulated for driving this project in a region of Nepal that is in desperate need of specialized care. In summary, this will save lives and prevent anguish.

RYPEN – Rotary Youth Program of Enrichment

The aim of RYPEN is to provide an enriching and challenging experience for Year 7 to Year 12  high school students. The weekend camp is a balance of social interaction, speakers to assist the students in developing life skills, and challenging activities and adventures. Preference will be given to older students if maximum numbers are reached.

RYPEN assists young Australians aged 13-17 to:
  • develop a greater sense of self-awareness.      
  • Appreciate diversity in society
  • Realise their own and other’s potential.
 
RYPEN provides opportunities and challenges for young people to review themselves and where they are in life and their direction in the future.
 
RYPEN achieves these aims through:
  • Providing an environment in which they can explore their own boundaries and gain a sense of self-understanding and self-reliance.
  • Challenging through active learning and problem-solving activities which are designed to stretch the mental, physical and social skills of all participants both individually and in groups.
 
RYPEN IN DETAIL

The Leadership team consists of Rotaract and RYLA volunteers who each bring a unique set of skills and experience.
 
The program is run over 2 days commencing on a Friday afternoon and finishing on Sunday afternoon.
 
It offers a variety of activities that allow participants to increase their knowledge and improve their skills in leadership, team building, problem solving and creative thinking. Participants also learn about understanding others.
 
These sessions are balanced with games and outdoor challenges that provide the opportunity  to practise new skills.
 
All sessions are done working in teams with an assigned leader from the leadership  team.
 
WHO CAN APPLY?

RYPEN is open to teenagers who
  • Are aged between 13 and 17. Applicants need to be prepared to participate willingly in all activities. The program is open to all young people.
  • Can participate in the duration of the program.
  • Participants need to be free of all other commitments such as school work, sporting and family commitments for the whole program.
  • must disclose all medical issues prior to camp. All medicines must be handed in on arrival and will be administered by senior camp staff.
This program is not suitable for applicants who are considered to be ‘at risk’ or have unmanaged aggressive behaviours.

Dates: 14 -16 June 2024

Cost: $350.00 per student

The Youth Protection register is ONLY available to the current Club Youth Protection Officer. The register allows the club to manage WWC expiry dates, Members Training,  as well as a register of members RYVID forms.

The register is an independent database and is not part of DACdb. As such you will need to set up your personal password  for the YPR. Click on the Forgot Password to set up your YPR password

The Youth Protection Register allows the club YP Offiser to manage your club members:
* WWCC - Working With Children registration
* RYVID - Rotary Youth Volunteer Information and Declaration forms
* WWCC Annual training date
